Alchemy Factory Skill Tree & Knowledge Altar Guide
Where points come from
The upgrade system was replaced just before Early Access: “Abilities are now improved by extracting alchemical knowledge from Relics via Knowledge Altars. The level cap is removed after clearing the game.” So the loop is build relics, sell some, feed the rest to an altar. In 1.0 “the Knowledge Altar can now break down any item to gain experience. Breaking down Relics grants additional experience,” and a launch-night streamer’s reaction was that all the excess items you used to bin can now be converted.
Hotfix 1.0.4917 fixed old saves refunding skill points repeatedly after the update, and the altar UI showing the wrong working time. If your point total looked wrong on 8 September, that was it.
What each skill does
From the March 2026 guide, measured in Early Access:
| Skill | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sales Ability | Shop profit up to 170% and customer purchase quantity 400% at 12 points; +10% profit per point after that |
| Customer Management | Higher quest rewards; +1 daily quest per 4 points (four random quests a day at 12); +20% rewards per point after 12 |
| Negotiation | +25% dispatch contract volume per point, no cap |
| Fertilization Efficiency | +10% fertiliser efficacy per point |
| Logistics Efficiency | Belt speed; 4 points or fewer keeps belts and throwers at 120 items a minute |
| Factory Efficiency | Machine and cauldron speed (and heat); does not affect nurseries |
| Fuel Efficiency | Lowers fuel cost; useful from blast potions and paradox crucibles onward |
| Alchemy | Alembic and extractor output rate |
| Throwing Efficiency | Cannon and catapult speed; skippable unless belts are maxed |
| Relic Knowledge | More experience per relic consumed |
Version 1.0 removed the shop-sales and purchase-contract upgrades from this list and moved those bonuses into Shop Recognition, so the 1.0 panel is shorter than the Early Access one.
A progression path
Early game (to about tier 4 or 5). Customer Management first: “in the beginning, you earn most of your money from the main quests, the side quests, and the various random quests.” Sales Ability does little while there is nothing to sell.
Tier 5. When advanced fertiliser arrives, Fertilization Efficiency, because flax, sage and red currant demand jumps.
Mid game (tier 5 to 8). Two to four points each in Logistics and Factory Efficiency, bought one at a time in step, so that balanced cauldron ratios stay balanced. Fertilization Efficiency up to 10 to 15 for growth potion, fertile catalyst and panacea. Two to five points of Fuel Efficiency once black powder and blast potions are in play. Consider up to four points of Negotiation if dispatch is your main income. Aim for 25 to 30 skill points by tier 8.
Late game (tier 9 and beyond). Alchemy, because brandy from alembics bottlenecks blast potions and aqua vitae, which panacea potions need, and because fairy dust and star dust conversions run through the same devices. Then Relic Knowledge while consuming Venus, Mercury, Luna and Sol; “once you get 200 or more skill points, the game often becomes all about this skill.”
Reset and the skill dump
Skills can be reset (Reset Points arrived in v0.4.1.3824). The guide’s four-step dump: stockpile relics in boxes, reset and put every point into Relic Knowledge, consume the stockpile through as many altars as needed, reset back to the working setup. It recommends not touching Relic Knowledge before the end game for the same reason: early points do more in profit and efficiency skills.
Jupiters are the cheap experience relic; the guide makes them from advanced-fertiliser byproducts and consumes most of what it produces, selling only enough to cover costs.
